Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Automation Security Kit Review

The Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Automation Security Kit gives you the best of both worlds – home automation and home security – all combined into one system.

Equipment

In terms of equipment, like most companies, the Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Automation Security Kit includes a central hub plus some basic intrusion sensors – a pretty standard offering. The intrusion sensors that come with the kit are sufficient to give smaller homes basic coverage. However if you have a larger home you’ll need to purchase additional intrusion sensors to cover entryways. Unfortunately, the kit does not include devices like glass break sensors or carbon monoxide sensors. You’ll need to do some research and purchase these sensors separately. ** Hub

This is the central hub that connects all of your home automation and security sensors to a single place. The central hub has a 7-inch built-in touchscreen that allows you to arm/disarm your system, customize settings and to view the system status all on the display. It also has a built-in internal siren that alerts you in the event of an emergency. The Samsung SmartThings Hub is powered through an AC power source with a backup battery to keep the system running in case there is an unforeseen power outage. The hub is wireless and cellular so you can rest assured that the system is reliable as it transmits signals cellularly so that you’re constantly monitored.

In terms of design, the SmartThings ADT Security Hub is very intuitive and user-friendly. It’s nice to be able to control features right from the panel unlike with some systems that require external devices such as keypads, RFID tags and keyfobs to control the system. Touchscreen panels are a lot more convenient to use and are also aesthetically appealing.

Door/window sensor

The kit comes with 2 wireless and battery-operated door/window sensors. These sensors can be easily placed/stuck on the doors and windows you want protected, and you will be notified any time a door or window is opened.

Motion sensor

The kit also includes a wireless and battery-operated motion sensor. You want to make sure that you place the motion sensor in a corner of a room at an angle that provides maximum coverage. When the system is armed, you will receive an alert if your motion sensor is triggered by motion in the area that it is placed in. Motion sensors are perfect for the larger areas of your home since one sensor can cover several doors/window in its field of view.

Setup

There are a few things to consider before you think about purchasing this kit. The Samsung SmartThings ADT Home Automation Security Kit is unique compared to other affiliated ADT products because it is a DIY kit whereas ADT systems require a professional installation. This means you will be responsible for setting up the system yourself, which might not be for everyone. However that being said, even if you’re not exactly tech-savvy you can still set up in the system in roughly 30 minutes or so with the help of the step-by-step guide. The kit is also expandable and a lot of smart home devices can be connected to it as well.

Home automation

Technology is evolving at such a fast pace that at times it’s almost hard to keep up. There used to be a time when home security systems were just that – security systems. However, with the help of Z-Wave technology, security systems can now double as home automation systems - the SmartThings system is that kind of security system.

Remote control

So what exactly is home automation? Simply put, home automation allows your home to become what is known today as a “smart home,” by connecting smart home devices such as smart thermostats, automated door locks, lights, appliance modules etc. to your main system using Z-Wave technology. You are then able to control these devices remotely through your smartphone app.

Uses ****

Here’s how you can make the most out of a ‘smart, automated’ home; say for instance you go away on vacation and forget to turn off your air conditioning. If you have a smart thermostat in place you need not worry. You can turn off your air conditioning while you’re on vacation with the simple push of a button on your phone!.

ADT has been a top provider in the security field in both residential and commercial. By partnering up with Samsung they have come up with a security solution that also places an emphasis on home automation.
